Ready, Set, AI: Harnessing responsible AI data governance for better business

Last Published: Oct 10, 2024 |

AI adoption is accelerating across modern enterprises. From Informatica’s 2024 Insights Survey of 600 CDOs, 45% of respondents stated AI is top of mind, having already implemented generative AI (GenAI) and another 54% are planning to do so soon.

AI technology has rapidly moved from the edge of the adoption curve to mainstream interest. This pace of change can be unsettling for many enterprises, especially as they grapple with the reality of using AI effectively and responsibly. This has caused organizations and industries to rethink their business processes and the value of human resources.

A robust AI strategy is now essential for modern enterprises — it’s a business imperative. As companies progress along this adoption curve, they are met with a perennial challenge: incomplete, inaccurate, insecure and therefore untrustworthy data. This situation underscores the importance of data management, as you can’t have an effective, compliant AI strategy without reliable data. It is crucial to understand how this impacts the business in real-time, especially to help ensure compliance with changing regulations, such as the newly adopted EU AI Act. The size, complexity and distributed nature of data, combined with increasing pressure for speed of action, mean that manual data governance and management practices of the past can never keep up with the agile business and compliance needs of today.

Harnessing Responsible AI Data Governance for Better Business

The human race is at a crossroads, as GenAI systems become increasingly prevalent in society, leading us into an unknown and uncertain future. We face critical decisions that affect all sections of our society — from working and living with GenAI systems to what this means in our daily lives. What’s certain is that we don’t know where the evolution of AI technology will take us, or how we manage this relationship for good or otherwise.

AI technology is not new, of course. Since the 1950s, AI has evolved from expert systems and powerful mainframe computers to machine learning and reinforcement learning, leading up to the current era of foundation models and GenAI. Today, global enterprises like IKEA are leveraging AI's potential to enhance customer experiences and drive better business outcomes through creative applications.

Moreover, the potential to expand into new sectors, like healthcare, offers opportunities to harness data in ways never seen before. This aggregates data from disparate and siloed sources to present practitioners with more comprehensive patient profiles that could support more insightful diagnoses.

However, proper control is essential, especially in managing data such as personally identifiable information (PII) in accordance with regulatory guidelines like GDPR. Compliance is a crucial component of the responsible AI puzzle.

AI and Global Regulation Standards

As AI technology has advanced, regulatory measures have evolved alongside it. Many countries and regions are at various stages of regulating AI, each with its own views of how best to do it. This lack of uniformity means there is no clear global consensus on the best way to regulate AI in a manner that fosters innovation while curbing potentially harmful uses of AI.

As a pioneer in international AI regulations, the EU AI Act officially became law in August 2024, setting a new global benchmark.

The Act is intended to ensure that AI systems are:

  • Safe, transparent and traceable
  • Non-discriminatory
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Respectful of existing privacy laws and people’s fundamental rights

The Act establishes rules for creating and using AI in the EU, aiming to foster innovation and curb potentially harmful uses. It is risk-based, meaning that the obligations correlate with the risk of the AI use case. AI systems that would pose an unacceptable risk, such as social scoring, are banned. Systems that would pose a high risk carry significant oversight, including formal risk assessments, logging of activity so that results can be traced, and providing appropriate human supervision.

Secure and Compliant AI with IDMC

As data explodes from AI use, the underlying technology foundation supporting the execution of the data management strategy requires AI-powered automation to scale. An integrated, cloud-native, modular platform can help de-risk AI initiatives and enhance compliance with new AI regulations like the EU AI Act.

Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud™ (IDMC) plays a central role in de-risking AI initiatives and enhancing compliance with regulations such as the EU AI Act. A comprehensive solution that offers data governance with privacy controls, data quality improvement and AI-powered data cataloging to ensure the transparency, reliability and integrity of data. This is all done through a data management platform that is multi-vendor, multi-cloud (including AWS, Azure and Google) and hybrid. Supporting on-premises and cloud-based systems with limited risk requires transparency, meaning people know when they interact with AI or AI-generated content. Through automated data management tasks and seamless data integration, IDMC increases operational efficiency and creates a single source of truth.

To deliver reliable AI outcomes, we need accurate, bias-free data protected according to applicable policies. Simply put, responsible data use leads to responsible AI.
